Gottwald Port Technology has supplied two of its 100t capacity harbour pontoon cranes for transshipping operations on the Mississippi River. The G HPK 8400 B floating cranes will be used for the transshipment of bulk goods, including ores, coal, cereals, and fertilizers and will be used along with the existing fleet.
Gottwald has used a 63t grab curve that Demag Cranes has ever installed on a floating crane, which will enable the crane to handle up to 1,850t of bulk material per hour. The crane is also fitted with a verifiable weighing system that is more precise than conventional load measuring techniques, which will ensure greater transparency in the quantity of transhipped goods. The cranes have diesel-electric hybrid drives, which will reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions to ensure an eco friendly operation. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will introduce its new crane safety rules and initiatives with effect from September 1st. These will include regulations that will stipulate the requirement for a comprehensive lifting plan to be implemented before a lifting operation can be carried out. The plan should have details like dimensions and weight of the load, the specific lifting equipment that will be in use and the communication pattern of the lifting team during the lift.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has also issued a code of practice for safe lifting operations in the workplace. The lift planners will be able to follow the guidance from the code and use these checklists in their work plan. Though the number of crane-related fatalities in Singapore are few, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will continue to step up its enforcement activities on crane operations to prevent accidents in work sites. China’s largest machine manufacturer , the Sany Group manufactured the world’s largest crawler crane rolled off the production line, making a new chapter in the Chinese manufacturing industry. The Sany crawler crane SCC86000TM has a maximum lifting capacity of 3,600 tons, higher than the maximum torque and capacity of any 3,200T crawler crane of the world, and is also the world leader in terms of lifting and torsion force. The state of the art design methods were used to design this crane to overcome the design challenges of non-linear structures and large deformation. This crawler crane uses the GB3811-2008 high-risk coefficient recommended for lifting machines used for nuclear industry and achieved a substantial break-through in structural design and control system. Built by a team of nearly 500 people and manufactured in the most advanced crawler crane production line of the world, this futuristic product has applied for 30 patents, till date and is likely to inspiring model of crawler crane in the days ahead. The FEM, the trade association for crane manufacturers in Europe, have stressed that crane should never be used for lifting people for entertainment. FEM also warns that in emergency and exception circumstances, when cranes are used for lifting people, a man-basket should be used.
The manufacturers are in the opinion that mobile cranes are not intended for lifting of performers in shows, tents, restaurants or in any way other than materials handling uses described in manufacturer’s manuals. 1. The use of man baskets should be ‘exceptional’, i.e. for emergency rescues only and even then only where this is the safest way to do the job. 2. Compliance is required with any the national laws regarding lifting people with cranes in whatever country the operator is lifting in this case. Equipment checks for the crane, the man basket, and any emergency equipment are also necessary. 3. An overload test lift (proof test) with an overload of 125% of the rated capacity of the basket should be performed at each new site and after each modification or repair. 4. Before lifting personnel, a trial lift with the unoccupied basket loaded at least to the anticipated lift weight to simulate the loaded basket should be performed simulating the complete planned lifting cycle. 5. This trial lift should be done at each set up location on a construction site where personnel handling is to be done. 6. The rope pull should be limited to 50% of the maximum line pull. 7. The crane should be used at 50% of the maximum capacity of the relevant load chart. Working in construction sites have always considered as dangerous. So are the number of accidents occuring with the cranes, especially mobile cranes.
Because of the crane’s height, there is a possibility that it will come into contact with electrical wires. And since the crane is metal, electricity can travel through it and can possibly injure the operator. Immobile cranes may not be in danger, but mobile cranes are another matter entirely. Mobile cranes, when being transported, have a very high potential of coming into contact with an electrical wire. This is the reason why mobile crane operators are very careful in their driving. The importance of the electrical grounding of mobile cranes is that this feature prevents accidents from happening. Electrical grounding of mobile cranes prevents this from happening. The electrical grounding system provides the most direct route to the ground. In a sense, it provides a detour for the electricity. Mobile crane electrical grounding systems judge the level of stability that the ground beneath the crane offers. This system then adjusts the position of the crane in order to maximize the stability. Because of this, people are assured that the stability of the crane is at the maximum. Another advantage to mobile crane electrical grounding systems is, the fact that they are easy to operate. People just need to push a button in order to render the crane stable. Mobile crane electrical grounding systems also save a lot of time. Because of mobile crane electrical grounding systems, people do not have to spend a lot of time making sure that the crane is not going to fall down on a task. A massive 80 tonne crawler crane was grounded in Cumbria. UK after robins were found nesting inside it! Workers on the United Utilities waste water site in Keswick were preparing to strip down the crane and return it to the rental company when the contractors noticed the nest with at least one chick in it.
The company managers have opted to leave the crane on site until the birds leave the nest. The construction project is intended to improve water quality in the River Cocker and Bassenthwaite Lake and is therefore environmentally driven. It is interesting to note that the robins nest is just one of four nests spotted on site. GDS International founded by Specer Green in1993 undertakes media and events in Bristol. Kobelco Cranes’ parent company Kobe Steel's Crane sales decreased for Fiscal 2010, despite expanding markets in Asia.
Sales for the Kobelco Cranes segment, which includes wheel cranes, large construction equipment, and hydraulic crawler cranes, totalled ¥40,968m ($505m). Unit sales were down from last year and demand was reported as ‘sluggish’. This resulted in a segment sales dive of 25.8% from the previous year. Ordinary income decreased ¥2.5bn, compared with the previous year, to a loss of ¥1.3bn. A substantial increase in unit sales in another segment, hydraulic excavators, compared to previous years, helped to ease the loss. China, Southeast Asia and Japan saw a recovery of demand for excavators. Sales for this segment increased 45% from the previous year. Despite low crane sales, new overseas locations were part of Kobe’s plan increase the value of the Kobelco brand. Kobe moved to establish crawler crane manufacturing facilities in India and China. |

Galizia distributor GGR Group has launched a new version of the Galizia G20 crane with electromagnetic front brake system. Designed for pick and carry tasks in restricted environment these features will enhance the operator control and hook height. The new brakes will enable the operator to shorten the stopping distance of the crane and reduce the free running effect when carrying a load, which makes the G20 crane well suited for working on the edge of platforms or on gradients up to 7%. G20 also has a slew of other useful safety features including a digital safe load indicator and overload alarm, which in association with the new electromagnetic front brakes ensures maximum stability to the crane and prevent the crane from tipping over. The 150kg capacity searcher hook enables more effective picking, lifting and placing of taller objects in places such as warehouses, manufacturing sites, distribution centers, workshops and factories. G 20 will be a perfect choice for lifting in sensitive environments such as the pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing industries. SpectWare has introduced a crane inspection software product, accessible via handheld units, that provides several tools for inspectors, including a database of OSHA regulations.
In addition to a regulatory database, SpectWare Pro offers a remotely accessible database with personnel data, machine history, and inspection history, and synthesizes this data to produce statistical reports. Spectware Pro is a cloud server, meaning that users can log on from internet-connected personal computers and handheld mobile devices. They can access the cloud with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and Blackberry. CEO and president Eric Skinner worked with ‘a team of industry veterans’ to create the system, which combines maintenance and inspection data. While inspecting he recognized that the only way to improve the inspection process and reduce accidents was through automation. The new software, which is now available to trial, will automate some parts of the inspection process, such as reporting and researching. The cranes with higher lifting capacity is the need of time. The 180 HC-L 8/16 Litronic is a new luffing jib tower crane from Liebherr in Germany. The 16 tonner is a development of and a replacement for the 160 HC-L.
It's new feature is higher lifting capacity across the full torque range. The articulation point has been moved further outwards and jib-end load is higher than the outgoing model. The maximum working radius of 55 metres capacity is 2.6 tonnes. Important parameters in the design of the new crane included practical requirements for rapid load handling at height on confined construction sites. Operation on restricted sites is helped by a rear slewing radius of 7 m. It can be mounted on the 1.9 x 1.9 m 355 IC climbing tower system, which can be outside a building or inside a small lift shaft. Above 60 m the 500 HC mast system can be used for a freestanding height of 64.9 m. Frequency controlled step less drives are a standard feature, including the 65 kW hoist gear, 45 kW luffing gear unit with secondary brake, and two slewing gears rated at 7.5 kW. More powerful motors are available – 110 kW for hoisting and 65 kW for luffing. For operation on very tall buildings, a hoist system is available for hook height up to 874 m, travelling at up to 338 m/min. More than 150 leading tower crane experts gathered in London on May 12 for the launch of International Tower Cranes 2011, the first-ever global tower crane conference and networking dinner. It was organised by International Cranes and Specialized Transport, and its publisher was KHL Group and delegates from more than 50 companies and 17 countries. They represented some of the biggest rental and contracting companies in the sector, including Arcomet, Morrow, BAM, Lend Lease, Cranes Inc, London Tower Cranes, Van der Spek and Select.
Countries inside and outside Europe were well represented, with delegates travelling to London from Australia, Brazil, China, India, Japan and the USA. The conference was developed as a top-level information and social event for leaders and senior managers of tower crane users, their suppliers and manufacturers. Presentations focused on best practice worldwide, safety and the development of common international standards, regulations and work practices. The conference also received strong support from the UK Construction Plant-hire Association and its respected Tower Crane Interest Group, which used the event to launch a report and guidelines on the climbing, or jumping, of tower cranes. Presentations were done on counterfeit parts, tower crane regulation in the USA, and safety requirements from a contractor’s point of view were particularly well-received. Other topics covered included, causes of accidents, the development of EN 14439 and global market trends. Tata Steel, the India-based owner of the Dutch-British steel manufacturer Corus, is planning an increased investment in the manufacture in Scotland of the specialist steels needed by crane builders.
For components like telescopic boom sections, very high strengths of steel are needed, and must be processed into very thin plates. Achieving the balance of strength, flexibility and weight needed to takes considerable expertise and investment. The difficult-to-make material, used in some of the most challenging environments around the world, is produced by heating steel to 1,000°C before quenching and/or tempering to alter its microstructure to improve strength. Specialist steel use in the crane industry is (at least as far as is normally publicly acknowledged) dominated by two suppliers. SSAB in Sweden's Weldox products have become largely synonymous with the type of steel used in modern all terrain cranes. In the knuckleboom sector in particular, Ruukki in Finland has made a name for itself. The Finnish company also came to prominence in the lifting industry for its role in producing the steel needed for the telescopic tower sections of Manitowoc's unique GTK 1100. Tata Steel said that it will invest £8m in its specialist steels Clydebridge plant in Cambuslang, Glasgow, increasing the plant’s capacity to produce the premium quality high-strength steel plate, essential for a wide variety of crane applications, by up to 50%. The new investment made by the company is after it has introduced a sector-focused approach with specialist knowledge of the industries they serve and the different products required by them. The crane industry is served by the Lifting & Excavating sector, which also spans the related product requirements of the construction and earth moving equipment, mining equipment, and fork lift truck markets. The new Effi-Plus system developed by Linden Comansa, increases hoist and lowering speeds with light loads up to 70%, so that the hoist cycle time is significantly shortened. Effi-Plus has been applied to the 24 kW, 37 kW, 50 kW and 65kW drives of its LC1100, LC2100 and LCL series cranes at no extra cost to customers.
The new drive system has been developed in-house by Linden Comansa. It does not use gearboxes with electrically or manually operated clutches, so that costly problems and difficult maintenance are eliminated. The maximum speed of the electric motor is kept low, thus minimising maintenance needs and extending the life expectancy of the motor and gearbox. Low motor speed allows the use a simple electromagnetic brake appended to the motor instead of a more complex brake system. |
